The president of the Philippines is

Glorya Macapagal-Arroyo, who assumed office in 2001. She replaced  former president Joseph Estrada, who was kicked out of office because corruption charges against him. Arroyo was appointed as president by the Philippines supreme court chief justice. In 2004 she ran for a second term, and won the elections.

Aurelio, Jocelyn Uy Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 06:02:00 11/28/2008 MANILA, Philippines—Two Catholic bishops Thursday called on the Filipino people to show their disgust at the junking of an impeachment complaint against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo by her allies in Congress by launching protests similar to what has unfolded in Thailands capital of Bangkok. We are so disappointed with the junking of the case If there are no more legal means, then we resort to extra-legal or extra-constitutional means, Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez told journalists in Quezon City. Let us show that we do not approve of what is happening and that we dont like it. Does that mean that its destabilization? Is that necessarily rebellion? Bishop Antonio Tobias said in Filipino. Iñiquez and Tobias of the Kilusang Makabayang Ekonomiya (KME), together with Akbayan Rep. Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel, made the call a day after the House of Representatives committee on justice junked the impeachment charges against the President for insufficiency in substance. The charges stemmed from Ms Arroyos alleged role in the scuttled $329-million National Broadband Network deal with Chinas ZTE Corp., the Hello Garci scandal, the P728-million fertilizer scam, the NorthRail deal, extrajudicial killings, the gold reserves contract for Mt. Diwalwal and the P5-billion Quedancor swine scam. The KME is set to hold a protest rally at the Balintawak Shrine in Quezon City on Sunday, Nov. 30, to commemorate the birthday of hero Andres Bonifacio, with Chief Justice Reynato Puno as keynote speaker. The bishops said they hoped that it would eventually lead to bigger mass actions. Asked by a reporter if he wanted the same scale as the Bangkok protests to happen in Manila, Tobias shot back: Ganun na nga iyun! (Thats it!). The Novaliches bishop said the President must be made accountable for the charges hurled at her. She has not yet proved that she is the legal president Until she does, I will not bow to her, Tobias said.

The Battle of Leyte Gulf, also called the "Battle for Leyte Gulf", the "Battles for Leyte Gulf", and formerly as the "Second Battle of the Philippine Sea", is generally considered to be the largest naval battle of World War II and also, by some criteria, the largest naval battle in history. It was fought in waters near the Philippine island of Leyte, from 23 October to 26 October 1944, between naval and naval-air forces of the Allies and those of the Empire of Japan.

Ginebra vs Coca Cola 11/27/08 Part2

SANS HELTERBRAND, GINEBRA STILL BEATS COKE Salvacion, Tubid shine as Kings repeat over Tigers Ronald Tubid and Sunday Salvacion picked up the slack in the absence of Jayjay Helterbrand as Barangay Ginebra repeated over Coca-Cola, 84-77, to force a five-way logjam at third place in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Olivarez Sports Center in Paranaque Thursday. Tubid sizzled with 22 points and Salvacion came through with 21 as Ginebra stayed on a roll sans Helterbrand, catching up with Talk N Text, Rain or Shine, Sta. Lucia Realty and Air21 at 6-6. Helterbrand, who scored 28 points in the Kings 81-77 win over the Tigers in their previous tiff, sat out the rematch due to a groin injury. Still, the Kings found a way to make it two in a row over the Tigers as they came out strong and hung tough in the face of a determined Coca-Cola chase in the final quarter. Junthy Valenzuela and Rafi Reavis returned from long layoff, playing briefly as the Kings dealt the Tigers an eighth loss in 15 games. Coca-Cola suffered its first loss since the return of Ronjay Buenafe and John Arigo from the injured list. Barangay Ginebra jumped the gun on Coca-Cola and held on to the lead to the finish for a third straight win following back-to-back victories over Purefoods and Sta. Lucia. Limited to seven points in the first 14 minutes of the contest, the Tigers waged a chase in the final half, reducing a 21-point deficit to one at 55-56 largely on the exploits of Buenafe, Mark Telan, Nic Belasco and Ronjay Enrile. The Kings, however, wont be denied of their longest win streak in the conference. Barangay Ginebra, which has actually now won four of its last five games, reorganized and regained momentum on back-to-back triples by Salvacion. From a 64-61 count, the Kings went to Salvacion, Tubid and Willy Wilson for clutch baskets as they eventually broke the Tigers back. Ginebra took the opening quarter at 21-6 and posted its 21-point spread at 28-7. (NC) The scores: Barangay Ginebra 84 Tubid 22, Salvacion 21, Wilson 9, Crisano 8, Valenzuela 7, Menk 6, Mamaril 4, Escalona 4, Artadi 3, Cabatu 0, Reavis 0. Coca-Cola 77 Telan 18, Cabagnot 15, Taulava 13, Buenafe 10, Belasco 9, Enrile 6, Macapagal 3, Rizada 2, Catli 0, Arigo 0, Dimaunahan 0.
