Have you ever thought it would be cool to take your tame bird outside? You can! And as long as you follow these simple steps, its actually safe! See Image

Steps

  1. See Image Clip your birds wings. Do this by taking good scissors, You can buy scissors especially made for clipping bird's wings. Or you can just take it to an avian vet or pet store that sells birds, as most clip wings for very little cost. Take care to cut only mature feathers. Leave the "blood" feathers alone. (dark at the base instead of translucent means they have blood in them and are still growing)
  2. Practice indoors. Check your birds reaction to being out of the cage first... before making the transition to out of doors. If your bird flies away from you and is difficult to call/attract/recapture, abandon your outdoor ideas until either the bird is tamer or you can purchase or manufacture jesses (light weight tethers for birds).
  3. Make sure the temperature is at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer outside.
  4. Cautiously, put your bird on your finger, then open the door. Walk the bird around the yard, staying away from roads, ponds, and other birdy hazards.
  5. Start with 5 minutes at a time and gradually increase the length of outdoor time.
  6. Gradually move your bird go farther and farther into your yard.
  7. See Image Know before it happens what will occur when your pets meet.

Tips

  • If you have a swing set, build your bird a perch attached to it. THEY LOVE IT!
  • If its hot out, buy a mister and spray them. You may notice them shaking their wings and opening and closing their mouth. That means they're hot!

Warnings

  • Take care. It is always possible that your bird might catch a breeze and fly away.
  • Do not take them outside if it's below 68 degrees. Most tame birds are from tropical climates and cannot survive in cooler temperatures.
