How is it that if you have a set of data, x1,y1....xn,yn with a known linear relationship between x & y (y = mx + c), and the best straight line fit MUST go through xbar, ybar (xbar average of all x values, ybar is average of all y values).

u have to wait till a good month before u take a pregnancy test, because if u take it too early it will be negative. Honey I have pregnancy scares all the time. Anything that my body does i relate it to pregnancy, yes being tired and moody is a sign of pregnancy yes, feeling nausous is. However, you have to think, when did u have sex, did the condom break? what are you biological chances of getting pregnant? Wait awhile, and take the test again. If you aren't pregnant go on the pill.

You're describing what might be light bleeding because you conceived and the embryo is burrowing in the uterus. If this is the case about a week after a HPT should be able to tell you if you're pregnant.

Do the test. If you are pregnant it could explain your symptoms. If not - it's probably better to see if anything else might be the cause.

How Can I Get Rid of This Yeast Infection?

QUESTION Dear Midwife, I have had a yeast infection throughout my entire pregnancy. My doctor has tested me for STD's and all are negative. He has prescribed metro gel to me. I have used this every few months. I am now on my 32 week and am using this prescription every other week. Is there something stronger I can use or something I can change or do different to help? ANSWER Metrogel will not cure a yeast infection, it's for a bacterial infection and can actually cause a yeast infection. Have you tried Diflucan (the yeast pill)? There are also over the counter yeast preparations and a heavy duty vaginal cream (Terazol) that might be appropriate. If all these fail, borax washes help some women and the yeast can be cultured to see what will kill it. Other things you can do for yourself include eliminating sugars as much as possible (no soda or juices for sure, only two fruits and two dairies per day) and eating more vegetables and proteins. Wrongly Diagnosed Miscarriage?

QUESTION Dear Midwife, ANSWER It's probably ok to wait until the first of the year, but of course we'd prefer that you be seen sooner, especially since there is a dating issue, and the best way to solve that is to do an u/s at about 7 weeks or so. The longer you wait, the less accurate they are, but they can almost always tell you which *month* you conceived in, even at 20 weeks! My best guess from what you say (since you still had a negative test on 10/5) is that this is a new conception. But there is really no way to tell for sure without an u/s. Congratulations! -- Cynthia, CNM. PhD. read more

Risks of Down Syndrome

QUESTION Dear Midwife, I am 34 years old and currently 20 weeks pregnant. At 18 weeks I had an anatomical ultrasound (I assume this is also what is referred to as a level II ultrasound). The u/s doctor told me there were 2 EIF soft markers on the baby's heart and that my chances of having a baby with down syndrome were 1:220 or so. Immediately thereafter, I had an appointment with my OB who gave me a lot of good information. I then went for the AFP test. Those results came back as 1:5000 for down syndrome and 1:1000 for other trisomy birth defects. ANSWER When they say "soft markers," that's what they mean, they do not have hard data that say that there is a problem. It sounds like even in the very worst case scenario you've been presented, you have a 219 out of 220 chance of having a normal baby. I'd go with that! -- Cynthia, CNM. PhD. read more

Temperature while Pregnant

QUESTION Dear Midwife, Is it normal that women who are pregnant have a slightly higher body temperature than non pregnant women? I been kinda sick and was worried. I had 98.7 on the thermometer by mouth and I thought that you usually add 1 to it so that would have been 99.7 but wanted to know if this was a normal temperature while pregnant? ANSWER It is not a dangerously high temperature in any case, so I don't think you have to worry. Do you know what your normal pre-pregnancy temperature was? Some women just run "hotter" than others, and some women are a little warmer in pregnancy, as you suspect. -- Cynthia, CNM. PhD.
