In the following manner:

1. Gently

2. Politely

3. With a smile

Don't:

1. Complain- if you want to protest, stay don't quit

2. Close doors- you can never know

3. Flatter- this is not the time to say how great the place is and how sweet the boss was

4. Use it for negotiating salary- there are a million other better ways to do that. A place where you need to threateen to get more money is a place you dont' want to be in. Furthermore, you dont' want to be coceived as a person who can be bought, it might harm your promotion

Do's:

1. Smile, be confident

2. Be accurate about the dates you're leaving

3. Ask what to expect in terms of the process (e.g. when are you off the company VPN ;-)

4. Make sure yo have another job

It depends much on your relationships with your boss.

If you find it hard to tell him/her face to face, write a letter. letter is much more formal, you can express yourself in a clear and straight forward way, without being put into presure by your boss, making you feel uncomfortable.

hmmm. It all depends on your goal. Potential ways of doing it include:

1. Sending email that you're not coming to work anymore (if you really couldn't care less what future references will say about you)

 2.  Telling your boss "I quit" on your next meeting

 3.  Saying "I'm exploring some options, I want to try new things, it's not you it's me" and letting them down easily (but stay firm)

 4. Coming to work in your flipflops and bathing suit for a few weeks until they fire you and you get severence pay as well. If that doesn't work, escalate - bring your goggles. Or sunbathe to the neon lights of the office, right next to the watercooler.

 5. For extra credit, tell them you're taking a three month vacation to go see venezuela and to get a little  high. Insist the vacation starts in a week. Insist that they keep paying you. They'll just HAVE to let you go.

There are many ways, but before I mention a few, please remember the golden rule:

'Never burn your bridge'  - If the other party burns it, that is fine. If you burn it the damage will be unrepairable.

Should you work for a real jerk that thinks he can walk all over you. Do the following: 1. line up a new job. 2. Start taking one item from your desk home every day. 3. Let some of your work pile up on the side 4. Gain some positive visibility with your bosses superiors or peers. (this may take some extra effort, or taking on an additional project but the results are much more elusive and devistating. Your boss will notice you trying to be productive and will completely skip over the possibility that you will be leaving any time soon. 5. When the time comes, announce your exit and give 2 weeks notice - this is a must. (if you did your homework, you will have accumulated too much side work and visibility that could possible be transferred to another person in 2 weeks.) 6. If you should be quitting abruptly or forced to exit upon announcement - make sure you have prepped your work items ahead of time (i.e. wipe your computer of personal stuff.  File and pile your work related files and folders (desk and computer files) into neat order. Empty your pagers and cellphone of their batteries. This will present a personal flare to your exit, showing your boss that you were in control of this whole episode.  For a final last perfect touch. Try to leave your workplace with 1 item only. Try to make that item a small but nice looking plant that you can walk around the office carrying while saying goodbye to your friends.

Next step: move on.
