Gorillaz is a virtual band, composed of four fictional animated band members: 2D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel. The band was created by Damon Albarn from the Brit-pop band Blur, and Jamie Hewlett, the co-creator of the comic book Tank Girl. Their style is broadly 'alternative', but with a very large number of other influences.

The people behind Gorillaz, Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, formed the group in April 1998.[citation needed] They originally identified themselves as "Gorilla", and the first song they recorded was "Ghost Train" (1998),[citation needed] later released as a B-side on their single "Rock the House" and the B-side compilation "G-Sides". The creative trio of musicians behind Gorillaz' first incarnation, Damon Albarn, Del tha Funkee Homosapien and Dan the Automator had previously worked together on the track "Time Keeps on Slipping" for Deltron 3030's debut album. This can be seen as the genesis of the musical style that continued into Gorillaz' first album
