Are parents in California legally responsible for their childs actions until they turn 21?

I Have an 18 year old son. Was kicked out a month ago ( no job, drug use, alcohol use, disrespect, etc.) My (older)sister(who lives in Washington State, and thinks she knows everything) told me we are responsible for any and all of his actions until he is 21, not 18. This is news to me. I am under the belief that the age is 18. Made sure all his vehicle, insurance, etc. were all put in only his name once he turned 18.  (FYI- we're not heartless--he has been "in trouble" for many years, and we have tried numerous things to help him, even spent a year at a boys camp)

Children are God's gift to the world...

Your older sister is incorrect. You are legally responsible for your child's behavior up until he turns 18.

My husband is from California.  He is divorced.  We have looked into the law on certain matters.  From what we have found out, once the kid is 18, their problems are their responsibility.  That is when child support ends.  That is when they are "adult."  You can try looking at

http://www.kinseylaw.com to see if you can get your question answered more specifically. This is a website for Stansilaus County.  I also found this, "At what age may a child choose with whom to live? The magic number in almost every single state is... (drum roll, please)... 18. (If it's not 18, Alaska, Alabama, Mississippi, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming are the only exceptions, the age is even higher, either 19 or 21; see Age of Majority.) Upon 18th birthday, child becomes adult, and may legally choose to live anywhere they please, either with a parent, or both, or neither. " which is from a michigan website located at  http://www.custodyreform.com.  I also grew up in the state of Washington.  I would suggest that your sister "thinks" more than she "knows."  In Washington state, it is 18.  In some cases, you can be 16 and tried as an adult, and that means that you, not your parents, are responsible.  Feel free to email that quote and link to your sister.  Even though it is from Michigan, it states clearly the states that have higher ages.  And frankly, I doubt it can be easily enforced.  Your best bet though, is to call the non emergency police and ask them.  You may want to point out to her, that in the 80's, there was at least one state that had a legal marriage age of 13.  She will say no.  Tell her to prove it. Make her defend her position.  (It is true by the way.  There was one for 13, and two or three at 15)  I hope this helps.
