do parakeets go to sleep with out a cloth covering the cage

Not usually. There is too much stimulation around the cage for the parakeet to go to sleep on its own. Putting the cloth covering over the cage gives the bird the opportunity to quite his "head" so he can sleep.
Mine do during the summer and late spring during the winter and fall it's too chilly.
