My bill is paid but collections is holding my vacation hostage!!!!

I called my timeshare to make reservations for my vacation this winter.  They informed me that I was in collections because I had not paid my maintenance and taxes so therefore I was inelligible to make a reservation until I resolved the issue.  I explained to them that I had paid the full amount in June (6/11/09) and even had the copy of my check and the statement where the check came out of.  They told me they couldn't help me that I had to contact the collection agency.  I called the collection agency and they explained because I paid just after the bill had posted to the collection agency that I was responsible for late fees and interest charges to date (8/25/09) and that the amount would continue to accrue until the fees were paid in full.  I asked them if they tried to contact me and they said that they had several pieces of returned mail.  I asked them to produce them and they said they don't keep returned mail.  Something that I really can't stand is that they are very rude as well.  Is what they are doing legal and if not how can I stop this from happening.  Not only has my bill been paid but my vacation is being held hostage.  Can anyone help? Thank you in advance

Jeannie, you're not going to like this but my understanding is that once a debt has been turned over to a collection agency there is a contract stipulating the ageny gets a percentage of the debt collected plus expenses. I understand what you are saying but your timing was just off enough and once the collection agancy was authorized they need to be paid.

My advise is to settle with the collection agency and resolve not to be in this situation again. You will not win this and the cost will increase as you delay payment.

PS; I am not in the debt collection business and my advice is based on the experience I had being involved with one of my kids in a similar situatioin.
