People Can Be Hell

I believe that  the first written proof was in the early 1900's, 1915 to be exact when a 1,000.00 was regarded as a "grand" sum of money. After WWII, I think that a grand sum was also an adopted "coined phrase" ( he,hee-coined) that came over from England in relation to money.

Yes, the etymology of this colloquialism dates back to the early 1900's from a grand sum of money. I believe the first recorded slang version is Amer, not British but I could be wrong.
