Could one earn money from ads by clicking on its own web site?

If I spend the day clicking on ads from Google AdSense on my own web page, will I earn enough money? Would this work or is there any technical lock?

Imagine this:

- you write a simple static web page filled with interesting keywords such as travel, car, luxury, etc in order to get AdSense to serve good ads.

- you click on 4 ads per minute. (that's quite slow).

- thats's 240 ads per hour.

- working 7 hours a day, that's 1680 clicks per day.

- at 10 cents earned per click (this is low I think), that's 168 $ per day.

- at 20 working days per month, that's 3360 $ / month. That's an honest salary.

- now imagine you earn an average of 20 cents per ad, you then earn close to 7000 $ / month: that's a great salary. And if you are smart you can publish content on your page to attract the the 5 $ ads. Or, you can click faster. Or, you could robotize the clicking and get back to the swimming pool. I'll let you do the math.

Where is the catch?

The catch is in the adsese terms of use:

"5. Prohibited Uses. You shall not, and shall not authorize or encourage any third party to: (i) directly or indirectly generate queries, Referral Events, or impressions of or clicks on any Ad, Link, Search Result, or Referral Button through any automated, deceptive, fraudulent or other invalid means, including but not limited to through repeated manual clicks" [...]

Google will very quickly detect that your are clicking on the ads. They have sophisticated fraud detection systems that can detect things like this. They can also very easily detect automated clicking tools. Its been tried many times, there have been stories about in in magazines like Time and BusinessWeek.

The folks that do manage to defraud Google are large crime syndicates in Russia and the far east. Since Google is very good at detecting the fraud from automated scripts, these rings publish mass free websites, usually porn, and encourge people to click on ads to get more free porn. This technique does often get around google's filters because it looks like actual people from around the Internet clicking on ads (it is people clicking on ads).

Some other folks send millions of email (which is quite cheep to do) and pay pepople to click on ads...they pay a few cents less than what the ad will make. When done on a massive scale they make a lot of money.

This is VERY illegal and the FBI and other international agencies are working hard to shut these activities down. Google will report you and ban you from its service if they detect this behavior.

Thanks, of course this is illegal but my question is whether they found a technical lock.

Cheers

It wouldn't work and you will be probably get kicked out of the program. First, all your clicks are coming from the same IP address, so they can be detected. second, even if you are getting more sophisticated and changing your ip in a certain way (which will make teh operatioon much more cumbersome), if there is an artificial click pattern (and there probably will be, unless you randomize it with a software) - it will also be detected. and......in any case i think there are better ways of making a living rather than clicking ads all day......:-)
