The Obamacare horror story you won't hear

Michelle Malkin - Syndicated Columnist - 6/19/2009 7:20:00

Michelle Malkin The White House, Democrats and Move On liberals are spreading health care sob stories to sell a government takeover. But there's one health care policy nightmare you won't hear the Obamas hyping. It's a tale of poor minority patient-dumping in Chicago -- with first lady Michelle Obama's fingerprints all over it.

Both Republican Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa and Democratic Rep. Bobby Rush of Illinois have raised red flags about the outsourcing program run by the University of Chicago Medical Center. The hospital has nonprofit status and receives lucrative tax breaks in exchange for providing charity care.

Yet, in fiscal year 2007, when Mrs. Obama was employed there, it spent a measly $10 million on charity care for the poor -- 1.3 percent of its total hospital expenses, according to an analysis performed for The Washington Post by the nonpartisan Center for Tax and Budget Accountability. The figure is below the 2.1 percent average for nonprofit hospitals in surrounding Cook County.

Rep. Rush called for a House investigation last week in response to months of patient-dumping complaints, noting: "Congress has a duty to expend its power to mitigate and prevent this despicable practice from continuing in centers that receive federal funds."

Don't expect the president to support a probe. While a top executive at the hospital, Mrs. Obama helped engineer the plan to offload low-income patients with non-urgent health needs. Under the Orwellian banner of an "Urban Health Initiative," Mrs. Obama sold the scheme to outsource low-income care to other facilities as a way to "dramatically improve health care for thousands of South Side residents."

In truth, it was old-fashioned cost-cutting and favor-trading repackaged as minority aid. Clearing out the poor freed up room for insured (i.e., more lucrative) patients. If a Republican had proposed the very same program and recruited black civic leaders to front it, Michelle Obama and her grievance-mongering friends would be screaming "RAAAAAAAAACISM!" at the top of their lungs.

Joe Stephens of The Washington Post wrote, "To ensure community support, Michelle Obama and others in late 2006 recommended that the hospital hire the firm of David Axelrod, who a few months later became the chief strategist for Barack Obama's presidential campaign. Axelrod's firm (ASK Public Strategies) recommended an aggressive promotional effort modeled on a political campaign -- appoint a campaign manager, conduct focus groups, target messages to specific constituencies, then recruit religious leaders and other third-party 'validators.' They, in turn, would write and submit opinion pieces to Chicago publications."

Some health care experts saw through Mrs. Obama and PR man Axelrod -- yes, the same Axelrod who is now President Obama's senior adviser. But the University of Chicago Medical Center hired ASK Public Strategies to promote Mrs. Obama's initiative. Axelrod had the blessing of Chicago political guru Valerie Jarrett -- now a White House senior adviser.

Axelrod's great contribution: re-branding! His firm recommended renaming the initiative after "internal and external respondents expressed the opinion that the word 'urban' is code for 'black' or 'black and poor.' ...Based on the research, consideration should be given to re-branding the initiative." Axelrod and the Obama campaign refused to disclose how much his firm received for its genius re-branding services.

In February 2009, outrage in the Obamas' community exploded upon learning that a young boy covered by Medicaid had been turned away from the University of Chicago Medical Center. Dontae Adams' mother, Angela, had sought emergency treatment for him after a pit bull tore off his upper lip. Mrs. Obama's hospital gave the boy a tetanus shot, antibiotics and Tylenol, and shoved him out the door. The mother and son took an hour-long bus ride to another hospital for surgery.

I'll guarantee you this: You'll never see the Adams family featured at an Obama policy summit or seated next to the first lady at a joint session of Congress to illustrate the failures of the health care system.

Following the Adams incident, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) blasted Mrs. Obama and Axelrod's grand plan. The group released a statement expressing "grave concerns that the University of Chicago's policy toward emergency patients is dangerously close to 'patient dumping,' a practice made illegal by the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA)" -- signed by President Reagan, by the way -- "and reflected an effort to 'cherry pick' wealthy patients over poor."

Rewarding political cronies at the expense of the poor while posing as guardians of the downtrodden? Welcome to Obamacare.

So now that we know where we're headed, can I "Pull the Cord" & "Get Off at the Next Station"???

So will Michelle become the latest Czar of Health care Dumping???

John

things you didn't mention in that statement , this hosptial has a rate over 80 percent emerency patients with no insurance and that hosptialis  one of only a few still operating in the area. if it cont. on it's current path , the hosptial would have to close. so adminstrators often have a balance act to play. you need patients who can pay or the hosptial would close. and then the other hosptial over an hour away would have to serve everyone.for everything  you must get paying customers in or theywould  have no money to keep the doors open. if the hosptial is in a very poor area how would suggest this be done?if only ten perect pay for the care how do suggest the staff get paid or the lights even. you make it seem as if they were guilty of racking up prfits to get rich, that is mis leading.  the plan was a good one but dumping patiences on the street is never good.that plan of regean was to keep the poor people in the poor people hosptial. we need health care for this reason people un insured are costing everyone ten times as much  in future care and simple basic care, i thinkher work in the hosptial showed this very clearly. what is different about the obama they don't claim to be perfect and admitt to making mistakes and getting it wrong and look to people like you to help get it right.we need to insure people it will save  hosptial money  you money and provide better care.i could pay  something or health care a month but all the plans want hundreds a month , who can afford that. and companies keep people part time just so they don't have to pay health care, my kids got a yearly letter and from company and this company with his weekly pay, paid out 15 percent more for his health care a year,if companies could cut cost by half that  you know how much money that would free up , we need a good health care plan to help small buisness save the goverement money and help everyone get the care they need

There are other ways to create a stable emergency room environment so that patients are appropriately treated. Rather than 'condemn' what has happened in many densely populated cities that do not have healthcare plans in effect why would you not consider addressing the issue through the AMA and local hospitals? Depending on the income of the family, there are government programs that can be of assistance.

Have you considered the importance of promoting medical education to those that cannot afford medical care? Have you considered having this information available through the school systems? The Department of Human Resources is available but not everyone knows what is offered or where to find information. An emergency situation IS NOT the time to try and find information. People need to learn what is important BEFORE there is an emergency.

I do not need to 'argue' an opinion because this has already been recognized as a healthcare issue. People need to understand what to do and where to find the information. Why not recognize the importance of education? It has been accomplished in numerous areas with the same case scenario. Yes, the cost of health care insurance is increasing and so is the cost of living.

Think about a positive answer to this question: education! Children go to school and the necessary information can be sent home to the parents. Babies are born in the hospital so why isn't the information that is necessary available? Why isn't it for the best to be sure that people learn and understand the importance of healthcare and hygiene?

Do you think that the necessary information isn't available? If your answer is, no, then please ASK!

No-one is 'perfect.' Agree or disagree? Medical care has been a 'problem' since the first of humankind began life. The history of medicine is well documented and with the advent of 'modern medicine' there has been progress in technology, pharmaceuticals and diagnostics.

Who is responsible for providing adequate healthcare in the United States? One question and multiple answers that can be summarized with a simple answer. Each and every individual is responsible for healthcare. Too simple an answer? Follow the logic and find you own answer. "The Obamacare horror story you won't hear . . ."

Why isn't it 'horror story' within the healthcare system? There are medical 'horror stories' that would seem to defy any limits of the imagination. People from different ethnic/religious backgrounds choose different ways of treating illnesses/injuries. Enter that in the 'search field' and start becoming responsible for your own healthcare. For those that choose 'conventional medicine,' why don't we use this as an example?

Healthcare requires a 'provider,' related medication and possibly an emergency clinic, nursing home, hospital, or outpatient surgical care facility. Who is responsible for the monies that provide medical services? Ultimately, those who pay their taxes via the IRS and, depending on the state, state taxes. There are taxes paid to the city and/or county, too. Basically, that can be simplified so that one can incorporate ALL taxation. Who is responsible for the checks and balances for reimbursement of funds? Do you consider that your responsibility? If you don't, you should. Why? Back to the 'Obamacare horror.'

WE THE PEOPLE, elect officials at all levels of government and so we return to RESPONSIBILITY. Those of us who care about our responsibility to others need to understand what that means. It means providing a way to help education those who are less fortunate in their literacy or finances. No matter the level, WE THE PEOPLE are ultimately responsible.

When there is a concentrated population of low income and/or literacy, there will be problems. Add other factors such as birth defects, lifelong disabilities, substance abuse /addiction, crime rate and all the rest -- are you beginning to recognize an overall pattern? What needs to be done to provide the 'best' healthcare possible? I don't have the answer but I do have an opinion (yes, I know about opinions).

A nationalized healthcare system doesn't seem to be the answer -- if it were, why would Canadian's who can afford healthcare come to the United States? Enough associates and patients will be more than willing to explain that question. What can be done within the existing healthcare system? Providing answers before they are necessary has to be a consideration . . . give this some thought because anyone reading this is literate, has a computer and access to the Internet!

For those of us that are professionals within the healthcare system, to lose a life or know the irreparable injuries through ignorance is a painful experience -- if it isn't, then we need to be in another profession!

Michelle Obama made decisions in the past about 'healthcare,' what happened? At this point, what is her involvement? She has maintained acceptance of her husband's decisions so why would anyone think that she would oppose his 'healthcare' reform?

Realistically, 'Nationalized Healthcare' is a summary of what has happened in Canada, is that what we want for our country? I don't!

Big government is bad government.  What happened to by the people for the people.  If the Presidential couple take over health care as they have the auto industry and financial institutions we are in deep do do.  He is the leader of the USA but wants to rule the world and be King.  I don't want Europe's or Canada's healthcare system.  Unless you have a lot of money and can go to another country if you are seriously ill, you die and maybe linger and suffer in the process.  I don't want socialized medicine.  I don't trust this man to do the right thing in any area, he lies and backtracks all the while smiling and eloquent.  Listen to what he says, not how he says it.  He scares me.  Hitler...remember him?  Only this man smiles while he takes our country in the wrong direction.

It sounds to me like a right wing Obama hater making up lies. He would vote for Bush again given the chance. Remember Bush?  The guy who lied to get us in a war. Obama will probably make some small changes to health care that wont amount to much.  He doesn't have the money.
