The first step is to contact your local junior college or college in your area. Then, get your degree in nursing. Once you have completed your nursing degree you can sit for your state boards and become licensed as a nurse.

Hospice nursing is one which can be difficult. You not only deal with a dying patient, but you also must deal with the families. Many of the families are dysfunctional and now must deal with the impending death of a loved one. You deal with the general public who may or may not respond positively to hospice.

My experience has been for the most part positive, but recently I have been seeing families who are demanding and their perception is somewhat skewed. I no longer take this personally, but it has made me rethink if this is truly what I want to keep on doing. The patients are sicker and most time you do not have time to prepare a family for the end. There are so many variables in play and you find yourself in a no win position. Hospice depends on a team of professionals who make this final journey an easy peaceful journey.
