Using non-synthetic oil Vs. Mobil One

Does anyone have any experience running standard oil in their Mercedes?  My manual calls for Mobil One 0W40 - full synthetic.  I've been told I can run regular oil (i.e. Castrol 20W50) and just change it every 3,000 miles Vs. Mobil One every 7000 to 10,000.
