I think President Obama put the emphasis where it belongs, on finding a way to keep unwanted pregnancies from occurring in the first place.
Those who believe that life begins at the moment of conception and those who think a woman has the right to terminate a pregnancy for any reason will probably never come to the middle, but that's where the vast majority of Americans are on this issue.
Even at the time of independence, abortion was held to be legally acceptable if it coccurred before quickening. One of the framers of the Constituion said "In the contemplation of law, life begins when the infant is first able to stir in the womb."
Those who simply want to make abortion illegal under any circumstances even when the pregnancy is a result of rape or incest or threatens the life of the mother, should take a better look at what occurred in this nation prior to Roe. It's estimated that in the 1950s and 1960s, anywhere from 200,000 to more than a million illegal abortions took place annually, many at the hands of back-alley butchers.
While there will always be some failures of birth control, its widespread acceptance would greatly cut the number of abortions occurring today.
While having a child and putting him up for adoption sounds good, there are more than 100,000 children stuck in the foster care system today awaiting forever homes. Those who oppose abortion under any circumstances should also strongly consider taking one of these unwanted children into their homes.
