Do I need to get officially diagnosed for anxiety attacks and mild agoraphobia?

Beyond a question of a doubt, I know I suffer from anxiety attacks and some form of mild social phobia and agoraphobia.  This is something I've had for years but I always assumed I was just anti-social because that's what people would tell me.  But last year I found out that my behaviour in public were symptoms , and they're something so many people suffer from.

I don't want to go on meds, in fact I don't think I really need to because I'm fine as long as I avoid certain public situations.

How right is it for me to self-diagnose myself? Should I get a professional opinion? Let's not forget that getting a professional opinion will cost me a lot of money, which I'm reluctant to spend because I don't have much of it.Embarassed

Would really appreciate some advice.

My advice is to try to get medical insurance and go and get professional opinion and also help.  Some therapy sessions might be able to cure you of these symptoms or at least make them better for when you do have to be in public situations.  It might cost for now but it will help you so much for work in the future.

Best of luck

I agree with "Debs", you NEED to try to get some medical insurance and get out there and get a diagnosis and some help. I used to have up to 5 PANIC ATTACKS A DAY, I suffered from social anxiety disorder, and was ALMOST diagnosed with agoraphobia. And I worked on it in therapy. It wasn't easy, but I'm about 80% BETTER. I don't even HAVE panic attacks anymore, haven't in over a year and my social anxiety is about 70% better. I don't even come close to having agoraphobia anymore. I know you said you don't want meds, but medicine has helped me so much too as well as so many other people with bad anxiety. You don't HAVE to live like this. You said, "I don't want to go on meds, in fact I don't think I really need to because I'm fine as long as I avoid certain public situations." It's only going to get worse if you don't get help. Avoiding only certain public situations will turn to avoiding MANY public situations, then ALL public situations, until you can't even leave your house... get help before it gets unbearable.

Many many people, who think as well as you seem to, can get by just fine by "treating" themselves.

Do some reading on the subjects that interest you and do some serious thinking.  Reward yourself for not spending money when it wasn't necessary.

If you have any support groups in your area, they can benefit your case beautifully.  Join them and when you feel comfortable and can trust them, share your feelings.  It's as good as and better (sometimes)than professional counseling.

If you are religious/spiritual you can always find people who are willing to help there.  Good Luck to you, NJoy

hi I think if you don't want to take med as a way to cure your anxiety I think a therapy might be the answer for it. Have you tried using EFT traning for that matter.
