I have had recurring neck pain for most of my adult life. Sometimes, when I have let it go on, I have ended up having pain all the way down to my elbow. No kidding.
The one and only thing I have found that will kick it is this: Hot and cold in twenty minute increments. Meaning, lay on the couch with a heating pad for 20, then an ice pack for 20, etc. Do this for a few hours every day. You MUST be diligent about this! It is a drag and a bore, but it it works.
Another thing that can help, if it is not yet too serious, is to let hot water, as hot as you can stand it, beat on the painful area in the shower.
