Thank you for responding to my questions so promptly.  However, I was aware of that.  I should have expanded my question to include, does the abundance if acorns dropping this season indicate we will have a longer, more severe, winter?  The grounds literally look like acorn fields.  Thank you.

I said something about it to my mom, because I have been living in Hawaii, where there aren't oaks, but she acted like it's normal= I don't know, but I like to think.  Maybe instead of indicative of a future event, maybe they are telling us about something else, something about this past summer, how we had all this rain in the spring and then a long hot dry summer?? I still think we should collect them and propagate ALL OF them and try to reforest our mountains-- where are you?? I'm in WV central WV

Plants can't look forward -- they haven't a clue whether the coming winter will be cold or mild, wet or dry.  What they do respond to is conditions as they exist, Oaks produce more abundant acorn crops in response to stress, usually an abnormally hot and/or dry summer.
