Why don't we have a national Native American history month?

Why don't we have a national Native American history month? We have them for other ethnic cultures and groups. I'm not a Native American but I'd be interested in learning more about the culture and contributions, not just knowing that many tribes have casinos.

I have always wondered this myself. It's the least we can do.

That's a good idea, but remember we have only12 months. Where will it end? Will we have to have a week set aside for an ethnic group? A day?

Well, mostly because those of us who happen to be Native Americans don't much care, really. We have enough trouble learning about our history, culture, religions and languages for ourselves after whites and christians tried sop hard to destroy them all. We don't care if you learn about us. It's a nice thought, but we'd rather have respect.

 Be Thankful

 Speak softly

 Let your love shine...

Two of our dearest friends are full-bloodied Cheeroke from North Carolina.  His mother still lives on the reservation there.  Our friends are both in education (retired now) and their pride is still intact and they most certainly have our respect.

My maternal grandfather from Tennessee was said to be 1/4 Cheeroke, but I don't know if that is heresay or truth.  It doen't matter.  We grew up learning about the Trail of Tears and have always given our Native Americans as much respect as we know how to give.

Currently we live very close to The Odawa as well as the Seminoles. We faithfully attend the Odawa Pow Wow every August and in the winter, we attend any historic events put on by the local Seminoles.  We like to learn about our fellowman.

Respect is the least we can do for our brother and sister Americans.

That Ms. CJ, Is the question to end all questions. When I was writing my novel on the Lakota, I came to the conclusion that they were more civilized by far then the white men who destroyed them. After reading over three hundred and fifty volumes of primary and secondary sources to write it, that is the only conclusion you can find. Sincerely Michael Joel Held

There are pros and cons to having a commemorative day, week, month. There doesn't seem to be a Martin Luther King or Caesar Chavez to unite the Native American tribes but maybe he or she is out there. Some descendants don't even like the idea.
