can I apply slate tiles directly onto my cedar siding? Do I have to put up lath and asphalt paper?What kind of motar or adhesive should I use?

No, No, No. Take everything off, inspect to see if anything needs replaced, also slate will be heavier a nd might need additional bracing. Really need to talk to a roofer because I don't think you will be doing this yourself.
