Depends on shirt, collar, and jacket. Wide spread collar is better with a thicker knot--generally the more narrow the collar, the smaller the knot. Obviously a narrow tie creates a small knot. Narrow ties are in style right now and look good with the 2 button, high breasted, tailored suits with narrow lapels (English style) that everyone has started wearing. Wider lapels call for wider ties. When in doubt, 3.5 inches at the widest point will fit virtually any outfit and will never go out of style. Narrow ties also look best when worn with jeans or under a sweater. Make sure the rest of your clothing is suitably "fitted" or tailored looking before choosing a narrow tie. Ties nearing 4" in width are pretty out of date.
