A narrow tie or a wide tie?

How do I decide between a narrow tie and a wide tie? Is this just a matter of fashion, does it depend on the shirt and the jacket?

I'm no fashion expert, but I believe an narrow tie is for casual attire, without a jacket, or with a sport coat. A wide tie should always been worn with a suit coat.

Through the years fashion has changed so that in some years a wide tie is more fashionable and in others the narrow tie is more acceptable. However, if you prefer to dress in a classic manner where you will not stand out, you should wear a medium width tie. Another factor would be your chest size. A narrow tie on a large frame would just emphasize overweight.

Undecided

Hi, I visited a site Neckties.com and chatted with customer service.

she mentioned tie width is actually a personal preference but if you were to wear a narrow tie it is best to wear it with a tailord suite.

(not baggy)

hope it helps.

Depends on shirt, collar, and jacket.  Wide spread collar is better with a thicker knot--generally the more narrow the collar, the smaller the knot.  Obviously a narrow tie creates a small knot.  Narrow ties are in style right now and look good with the 2 button, high breasted, tailored suits with narrow lapels (English style) that everyone has started wearing.  Wider lapels call for wider ties.  When in doubt, 3.5 inches at the widest point will fit virtually any outfit and will never go out of style.  Narrow ties also look best when worn with jeans or under a sweater.  Make sure the rest of your clothing is suitably "fitted" or tailored looking before choosing a narrow tie.  Ties nearing 4" in width are pretty out of date.
