I know a person with the last name Gittleson, it isnt very common, but i am wondering if anyone knows where it may be originated from or what it may mean. I heard that it came from the word gute (yiddish) meaning son of Good. But i am wondering if there is anymore knowledge out there.
Love is the battery of life....
Hi Dinobot, ------- Gittleson is, most probably, a jewish name meaning “son of Gittle” (and Gittle used to be a common female name [NOT any more] with several possible meanings (one is what you suggested). There is an institute in Israel, I don’t know it’s English name (“Merkaz ha’Tfusot”, Jerusalem, Israel) if you write to them they’ll give you all the details of the Gittleson family. Try it (it’s free of charge). ------ Best regards,
thank you, means a lot.
I've also heard that it might be Scandanavian, I wonder why that is, the person I know is also not Jewish so it makes it seem odd.
The 1930 US Cencus listed my grandmothers last name as Ramey. What is the origin and/or nationality for this last (Family) name
Ramey I'm guessing is either German or Irish.
