The name Eugene

I just read something about a Russian man called Eugene and I was surprised to see this because I thought it was an English name. I looked for information about it and found that the origin of the name is Greek, but I never heard about a Greek man with this name. Is this used in Greece in this exact form, or is there a Greek version for it? Is it a common name in other places?

The short answer is that it's Eugene in English, Eugenios in Greek, and Yevgeniy in Russian.  Sometimes, the Russian or Greek names are translated as Eugene.

There are other variations of this name in several languages.  You can find out more at Behind the Name's pages for Eugene, Yevgeniy, and names beginning with E.
