Usually in music notation, a smooth curved line over a group of notes indicates a phrase.  Each phrase begins with an "attack" and ends in a "release" with the notes played legato unless otherwise notated.  A phrase in a melody is like a sentence with a Capital letter at the beggining and a period at the end.  In studying technique, there is much to be learned about playing phrases.  The above is just the basic information.
