Best movie not up for Best Picture Oscar

What's your favorite 2006 movie that

wasn't nominated for the Best Picture Oscar?  In other words, which film do you think was tragically left off the list of five nominees?

I was late for work this morning, because I got stuck in Zeno's paradox.

Its been years since the academy awards were anything more than a way to promote the ticket sales of certain movies. I haven't seen all the movies that were nominated for best picture but if it were up to me I would put "Children of Men" and "Volver" on the list

I think you're right about promoting ticket sales.  The commercials celebrating the nominations for "The Departed," "Letters from Iwo Jima," etc. are annoying -- but effective.

"Children of Men" does look good.  It sounds like a downer, so I'm surprised and impressed that it's popular.  I'll have to see it.

I'm lucky enough to live near La-La Land, so I imagine Volver's still playing somewhere around here.  I'll look into that too.

Anyone have other recommendations?

(Side question for MackTheKnife: What does the song "Mack the Knife" mean?  It's a great song -- but strange lyrics!  "Oh the shark has pretty teeth dear ....")

The song is from the Three Penny Opera, written by Kurt Weil in the 1920's (I think). In the opera, Mac Heath was a criminal and he killed someone. And that explains the words of the song (comparing him to a shark that kills).

So why choose the name of a murderer as my signin? Well, its a long story, perhaps if you're interested I'll explain it LaughingLaughing

Intriguing!

I guess we're getting off-topic -- but sure, I'd be interested in the story behind "MackTheKnife."  Who knows ... it could be the basis for a future Oscar-winning movie!  Smile

I'm always sort of surprised when people say that Children of men was depressing, I thought it had a very upbeat message. After I saw the movie, I said that I would have done the ending differently, but my friends who saw the movie with me said that my way would have been too depressing. So I guess I'm not much of an indication....

What's Rang de Basanti about?  (For some reason, I like that title, though I don't know what it means.

Thanks, MackTheKnife and praveen, for your suggestions.

Incidentally, I looked up Rang de Basanti -- it's getting good reviews.  (The title apparently means "The Color of Sacrifice.")  I'll have to check that out.
