Hi Joel,
The frame story of the movie is very very close to the reality, the set, the main events, weapons, license plates - everything authentic. As for the hero himself, I can only asume that here was the only place that Spielberg took the liberty and reflect it the way he believed. Those anonymous heroes will be stay anonymous I believe for many years to come, as many of the people involved on both sides are still alive (30 years older....but still alive....)
