Yes do rent a car, mountain view is a small but you do have san francisco, redwood city, palo alto, and san jose, and sunnyvale within driving distance that doesn't take more then 30-40 min. to get to. Truly don't stay in mountain view trust me I worked there for more than a year, but lived in san jose.
