In my opinion it depends on where you are traveling to. I'd say that to any western\developed country a credit card and some cash would be enough, as virtually any kind of business will accept it, and it would also be easy to find an ATM.

The problem is with developing countries such as India. Most shop and merchants won't accept credit cards, and it's impossible to find ATM outside big cities. carrying cash is also not so safe as there's high rate of stealing from tourist. For such countries Travelers Checks are the best option, as many businesses, even on rural areas accept them, and they are insured.

In most cases, you are best off with a credit card and an ATM card.  This way you can have some cash, enjoy favorable exchange rates via your credit card, and get an easy summary of all on your statement.  Additionally, depending on your card your shopping may be insured.

Travelers check are an old form to carry currency, which I would not recommend any longer.  For great trips and ideas check out TripWiser.com

Definitely credit card if possible. This is a huge advantage for even if you lose it you can always cancel it. Travelers checks would be a great solution as well the only problem being they aren't accepted everywhere which can be a problem in a pinch. Cash is the least recommended fro obvious reasons of theft and lose.

You can always mix it up a bit and I do think it's good to have a little bit of hard currency on you no matter what.
