My physics class used #2 pencils with 160mm of usable graphite and drew lines on 28 cm (11 in) paper. Each team measured the length of their pencils then drew 200 straight lines on the paper = 5600cm = 56 meters (183 ft). The pencil's average loss of graphite was 3mm. Our calculations reveal that an average # 2 pencil would generate a line 2.77 miles long (following conversion from SI to English units!).
