The meek shall inherit the earth

Jesus said, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."  What do you think he meant?  (I feel sad because it looks like the strong always inherit the earth.)

This all depends on your overall interpretation of the beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount. I tend to interpret the beatitudes in an allegorical way and as a teaching on the progressive nature of salvation and sanctification. John Calvin seems to hold loosely to this line of thinking in his commentaries. If we fast forward to the end of the Bible and look at who will ultimately inherit the earth it will be those who are in Christ, those who are counted among His sheep. And Christians should be described as meek or humble, not proud or boastful.

If we read Jesus' sermon as a spiritual lesson that looks forward to His coming Kingdom I find little reason to be sad or disheartened since the great message is that God will see justice done and those truly deserving of honor honored.

The word translated "meek" comes from a root word meaning "afflict, humble, humiliate." Yes, "the meek ones" are those who humbly wait on Jehovah God (the only true God) to right all the injustices inflicted upon them. "They will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace." (Psalm 37:11)

I have heard a couple of interesting interpretations of this verse. One is that the Earth is the realm of the Devil, so who would want to inherit it? If you are meek, it goes to you.

If we look at it from more Jewish perspective, the Devil doesn't exist as such and the original Hebrew (from Psalms) can be translated as humble. In Chasidism, it is said that Humility is God's cloak. A cloak is something that can be removed, it is not a permanent character trait. So, if you can act meek (but still have the capability of being the opposite), you can inherit the Earth (which, in this case, isnt such a bad thing).

Yes being meek means being humble; one who endures long-suffering.  So the text is basically saying that those who are *genuinely* humble and able to endure any type of long-suffering NOT those who are full of overshadowing pride, will inherit the new Earth to come after Jesus comes again. If you think you have a problem with being proud or arrogant, bring it to the throne of the Almighty. I mean if you do believe He is Almighty how much more should you believe that he can change you and help you to develop more and more every day into a loving, humble, meek person. Oh our God is so Loving and His faithfulness to us will never go weak.

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. -- II Peter 3:9

I wish the best of blessings from the Most High! LOVE

evolutionary theory of Darwin suggests that in survival of the fittest that as we become more adaptive to our environment through manufactured means of coping with changes to it, aka tools, that we become less adaptive species in a physiological scope, while our minds must be more adaptive.  Where as an amoeba might be the lowest and the human mind might be the highest evolutionary forms.  Ultimately entropy wins all arguments in the physical world.

From a spiritual standpoint, if Jesus has beaten death and then thereby given life through faith in him that we should divest ourselves of the arguments that we might make with our mind or highest evolutionary form and follow the teachings of Christ to inherit our life beyond the gateway of death, in the spiritual sense which in a psychological sense is the systemization of thought that allows the adaptivity of our mind to cope with its physical loss as an impermeable panic reflex to its survival mechanism.

That by making ourselves weak to allow for the way of Christ we shall encounter and receive ever-lasting life.

To beat death one must give into it.

or something thereabouts.
