Medieval festival music

We are organizing a medieval themed event and I would like to play some medieval music during it, as authentic as possible.

There is plenty of medieval music around from many composers but most of it is religious oriented - masses, chants and other church music, which is nice but isn't exactly party material.

I am looking for something much more cheerful, the sort of music that was played during festivals, tournaments, on streets and in taverns, performed by bands and troubadours with flutes, lutes, bagpipes, vielles and other medieval typical instruments. Any medieval period goes, up to (and possibly including) the renaissance.

Can anyone recommend anything? Free download locations would be best but also stuff I can buy online or even just lists of performers and composers I can look for.

Thanks

Sounds like fun!!!

Did you know that there is a wide hobby/lifestyle of people that doe this.  They are members of the Society for Creative Anarchronism.

They love to document every composer for every event that suits the mood of what they are doing.  Here's their page.   A full list of all composers that might be of interest to you, and a great way to get started sourcing the music.

Hope that helps!
