medical insurance advice

"medical insurance advice"

I have a question about medical insurance.  I am retired and covered by three policies. Two policies are from my previous employers and end when I turn 65.  My wife works full time and also lists me under her policy.

One of my policies clearly state that they are always secondary if another policy exists.

My other policy is currently considered my primary and my wife's plan secondary.

My wife's plan is primary for her and my plans secondary. My plans tend to pick up most of her co-pays but her plan picks up less than half of my co-pays.

I do not feel I am getting full value for my coverage and need to discuss the matter with a knowledgeable person.

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

Assuming that you are a U.S. citizen:

When you turn 65, most health insurance companies insist that you sign up for medicare.  It worked out quite well for my brother, who was dianosed with cancer just before his 65th birthday.  Virtually all the expenses were paid either by the insurance company or Medicare.

Perhaps you could contact a Social Security Office near you, and see if they have any seminars or reference material regarding this subject

Caring for others like thyself.

No matter what or who you will always have a coordination of benefits.  There is no obligation to take Medicare.   If you wife works until, say age 70, her 'private" company sponsored Plan will be Primary.   There may be an 'exception' in her Policy that at a certain age, it is not renewable.  As you get older, possibly have more claims, it drives the costs up for the entire Group  (Insurance Premiums)

I could consult with an Insurance Company who can explain the fine print of her benefits or contact Human Resources where she is employed for an explanation.

It depends on your cost for the secondary insurance to see if it is worth it.  If you only have your primary coverage, how much total out of pocket for each calendar year is involved compared with the cost of the secondary insurance.  When you reach 65, getting on Medicare and either using your current plan as secondary or getting a Medicare supplement plan should take care of most of your medical expenses.  You would want to compare your current plan and cost with the Medicare supplement plans.
