How can we find meaning in Labor Day

What can we do in America to help Labor Day to mean something to us?  I think that most people just view Labor Day as a day off from school/work.  Do you agree or do you actually feel some sort of significance?

We're not retreating... we're advancing in another direction.

I think that there should be city events and ceremonies in honor of America's national holidays.  I agree that it's a problem, to just have a day off from work/school when these days were meant to mean something, when they are memorializing something that happened in history.

To be honest, I typed this up on dogpile, because I am really unaware of the meaning.  I know about Memorial Day, Independance Day, but in a world at the pace we live it now, what does it mean.

A lot of people search for meaning but...Labor Day?

Labor Day definitely has resonant historical significance as it honors the efforts of early union organizers, such as Eugene V. Debs and Peter McGuire, who established the standards that even non-union workers enjoy today (i.e. 8hr days, holiday pay, sick leave, etc.). Ironically, it is celebrated by not going to work.

If you are so inclined to create a tradition steeped in the "true meaning" of Labor Day then I suggest you gather up your co-workers every September and start making demands of your boss.

Despite o.G. Rastamans true and intellegent response, labor day is just a break for people who work hard all year round and nothing more, and we should enjoy it and be thankful for it. It might have been less confusing if they called it leisure day, but what can you do?

It is a 'memorial day' to all those who actually gave their lives so that you could have fair labor rights.
