A masectomy hematoma

i am a 44 year old woman who had a bilaterral mastectomy on  dec.1,2008. I also had enhancers put it on the same day. About 5weeks later they had to take them out due to infection. 7months later they found a blood clot in my port in the right arm. They removed the port and started me on cumadin immediately. About 3 weeks later the left side of my chest started to swell underneath my masectomy scar. About 5 days later I woke up and the left side of my pj s was soaked with blood. I went to see my surgeon the following day and when he made a small incision on my scar blood started squirting everywhere. My surgeon said there was about 60cc or in my terms 4ozs of blood. For the next two weeks I went everyday for him to drain and clean it and pack it. I am now doing that myself and see him about every 3 to 4 days. My questions are how long will it take for the hole to heal up and close from the inside out, what are the chances it could happen again, and what do you think caused it in the first place.

Margie, I had an open wound from a port in my chest, on the left side. My wound was because chemo therapy infultrated my skin, so they had to take the port out and left and open whole in my chest for it to heal from the inside out.  I had it taken out sometime around april and (few years ago )  it took till about september to close up. Mine was above my breast. Hopefully if yours was just a hematoma it will heal a little faster. I think alot of mine was due to the harsh drugs that leaked into my skin and of coarse slow healing due to chemo. There are many factors that will alter how quickly you heal.  I wish you the best. God Bless

A hematoma can happen after any injury or surgery, Especially when blood thinner is involved. A vessel that has been cut or damaged leaks or seaps blood and it has to go somewhere so it begins to pool in an open space or a weak space that it can expand.
