I seriously doubt it. There are, if I recall right, 8 different dialects in China, with Mandarin being among the most difficult. Television, radio and newspapers use an official government dialect which is something of a mixture in order to simplify understanding. Movies are made is Mandarin and Cantonese.
The problem with Chinese becoming a universal language is that while spoken language is relatively straightfoward, the written language is all but unimaginably complex for someone not born in China and raised with it.
I do think, however, that if one wishes to be involved in business or politics or such, that it would be wise to learn Chinese.
