It is possible that Chinese will become the global language in the future. Nowadays, more and more people are learning Chinese and it can be said that Chinese is becoming very widespread. So maybe some time in the future the majority of people in the world will speak Chinese. But whether Chinese can become the official international language depends on the development of each country all over the world.

I seriously doubt it. There are, if I recall right, 8 different dialects in China, with Mandarin being among the most difficult. Television, radio and newspapers use an official government dialect which is something of a mixture in order to simplify understanding. Movies are made is Mandarin and Cantonese.

The problem with Chinese becoming a universal language is that while spoken language is relatively straightfoward, the written language is all but unimaginably complex for someone not born in China and raised with it.

I do think, however, that if one wishes to be involved in business or politics or such, that it would be wise to learn Chinese.

The straight answer: I don't know. I hope there will be no such a thing as a universal language - if you mean the only language spoken. As for a universal second language for everyone - that is a very important goal. I hope that it will be Esperanto, or something very similar to it.

Chinese, Arabic, Spanish and English can be real candidates if Esperanto fails, but I think these 4 have similar chances.
