If you want the protection of the premium brand anti-corrosion solutions without paying a premium price, you can make your own at home with just two common ingredients. The coating that this recipe makes is not only cheaper than the highest rated anti-rust products, it is also easier to control during application and adheres better to metal surfaces. It also stores well for years, so you can mix up a large batch and continue using it season after season.

  1. Fill a large saucepan about halfway with water and place it over low heat. When the water is hot, place a large bowl over the saucepan to create a double boiler.
  2. Add one cup of petroleum jelly to the bowl and allow it to warm up for a few minutes. Then pour in ¼-cup of lanolin. Stir the mixture with a wooden spoon until it is the same color throughout and has the consistency of warm honey.
  3. Pour the solution into a large glass jar with a tight fitting lid. This jar will be the storage vessel for any unused portion of the treatment.
  4. Use a paintbrush to apply the still-warm solution to metal objects that need rust protection. This solution is appropriate for metal tools, gargen equipment, exterior metal fixtures and even appliances. Just be sure to apply it in a thin, even layer while it’s warm.
  5. Store the leftover solution in an airtight jar and keep it in a cool, dark and dry place. Before reusing it for future applications, heat it in a microwave or over another double boiler and stir it well.
