How long can wine sit after opened?

I can never finish a bottle of wine the same day it's opened. How long can a bottle sit corked and still be good to drink?  I'm afraid to try the wine that has been sitting there a couple weeks.

use it for cooking, should be ok unless it has been left open to the air......

Re cork part bottle should be ok to drink over couple of days.

A red wine left sitting out and corked can last up to three days if not exposed to extreme heat. A white wine corked and in the fridge could last up to 5 days but best used within the three day period.

Hi, I bought an expensive bottle of Chianti, "Tuscolo" for Valentines day, which I NEVER do...and it was wonderful. We saved half the bottle, because it was great...but the next day it wasn't so good. Apparently wines oxidize and in this case, a pleasant acidity became excessive. They make a device which closes a partially consumed bottle with a plastic cork, and pumps out the oxygen, about $22.00, can't recall the name. This is said to prevent the problem. I bought one, haven't tried it yet. On my usual $6.00 wine it probably wouldn't matter! It gets better when oxidized!

Wine oxidizes quickly when exposed to air. There are two ways to make it last longer. One, as Birdman suggests is to purchase a special pump with stoppers having one-way valves to remove the air and keep the wine bottle hermetically closed. Another more primitive way is to fill the bottle with glass marbles until the wine reaches the top and to then insert a cork.

Life's too short for excessive compromise... maximize everything!


Most wines will fare best after opened if they are vacuum sealed and (as stated in other answers) and refrigerated.  Vacu-vin makes a product that uses a pump and rubber corks.  Care should be taken not to over pump as it will result in accelerated oxegenation.


That said, I have kept both white and red wines for up to seven days.  Some whites however will deriorate after only 2 or 3 days, while others can hold up very well. It will vary by wine and vintage and with experience, you will be able to tell which wines will keep better than others. Red wines with significant tannins will keep up to 2 to 3 weeks with vacuum seal and refrigeration.


If the plan is to store a wine after opening, best results will be achieved by sealing the wine as soon as possible after opening.  Be advised that each time you pump, you will impact the wine.  With Vacu-Vin, 5 pumps are usually adequate for a bottle half or more full. With les in the bottle, additional pumps may be needed.  I pump until I feel resistance and with an almost full bottle, 1 or 2 pumps is sufficient.
