A cousin is short on cash. She is self-employed as a recruiter for engineering positions. We are considering paying her mortgage for up to 3 months and helping with her utilities. She is claiming that she expects to be paid for a job placement in December. Her mortgage is $1,200/month. Our thought was to pay the mortgage directly to the lender--does that make sense?

If you are giving her a "gift," and can afford to help her out, great.  If you are merely giving her a "loan," don't do it. You will, most likely,  never get it back.  It shouldn't take three months to be paid for a job placement. In addition,  has she made any attempt to find a job to help her with expenses  until she has more money coming in? How will she be able to keep up on her mortgage, much less pay you back.   Lending money to family members almost always results in hurt feelings and the end of the family relationship.
