A little more understanding about God!

I do believe in God, go to church, but have some doubts, and unanswered questions.  I'm no scholar on the holy bible, and I would consider my self the last person in the world to come to for advice on religious matters.  I'm trying really hard to believe everything I'm being told.  but the questions I have just contradict what people tell me about God.  I'm told God loves everyone, and from my understanding, God is all about Love, and being kind to one another. if God cherishes life and loves everyone, then why did he sacrifice his own son, so that we can have our sins forgiven?  I mean this is God is it not? couldn't he just make the law that our sins will be forgiven.  Never in a million years, could I even come close to thinking about doing such a thing to my own son. And how about Abraham, God told him to kill his son to prove that he had faith in him.  What????  doesn't God know everything, know what's going to happen in the future, know how many hairs are on our head?  Why torture a loving faithful father, and have him kill his own son to only prove what God already knows?  I mean that is just cruel.  this is only the scratch on the surface of so many questions.  but can someone answer this for me?  tell me why he would let these things happen?  that's why i'm having so many doubts, but I really do want to believe, the end result of having faith sounds really fantastic.
