Inexpensive reading glasses vary in price from $1 to $10 a pair in some parts of the country as of the time of this writing. Go to the least expensive place reading glasses are sold in your area.

  Get a pair of reading glasses off of the rack. Make sure the frames are wide enough to fit your head without bending the arms of the glasses. Put them on and select some package label, that has some very fine print on it. Place the label at the approximate same distance from your eyes as you would have, if you was reading a book. If the small print is not very readable, swap the glasses for a pair with a different magnification. (Magnifications for reading glasses usually range between 1.0 and 3.25). After you have narrowed the glasses down to the best pair, shut one eye and read , then shut the other eye and read.

  If you're lucky both of your eyes are approximately the same strength and can use the same magnification for each eye. (If not, write down the correct magnification for each eye, and go to a place where glasses are sold by an Optometrist. At least you saved the price for an eye exam).

  Tips & Warnings
  • 
    When testing for glasses for computer usage, place the label to be read at approximately arms length with fingers outstretched or however far you normally are from a computer screen when using.
  • 
    Cheap reading glasses may scratch easier than more expensive glasses, so get a good glasses case, even for a cheap pair of glasses.
  • 
    On some days due to eye strain or lack of sleep, you may need greater magnification. For some people, eye testing for an additional pair on one of these eye fatigued days, might prove beneficial.
  • 
    A more detailed eye exam, by an Opthalmologist may be preferable for some people. An eye disease could be detected that is causing your eye sight to fade.
