feedburner is just a popular site where it is a little easier to get your content syndicated. it also has user friendly option for feed subscription which is helpful in getting some feed subscribers. but if yuo can do an RSS feed on yuor own site and setup the subscription options, then it can do the same job. rss feeds dont take up much resource as it is pretty much an XML file
