I can't answer your question, but, if this is an area of high interest to you I can recommend a really interesting book called " LANGUAGE VISIBLE" by David Sacks - story of the development of the alphabet. Sounds dull, but it's a fascinating little book, broken down by each letter - full of info and interesting tidbits.
Swedish and Norwegian, I think, are the most closely related European Languages.
