How much lilac sucker circumferance do i need for bush to grow

How much lilac sucker plant do i need to give to a friend to start a lilac bush? In other words i have been spading up my lilac suckers and putting in pots for friends. But i have more friends than lilacs so how much plant do i need to give each friend in inches in circumferance please.
