Getting too involved? They've been too involved for too many years. If it's not the federal government, it's the state, if not the state, it's the county, if not the county, it's the city. My country has the highest rate of incarceration in the world, in any way you measure it, per capita or gross numbers, and the prison population continues to rise. Anything and everything is regulated to extinction, and more and more serious business people are turning to non-regulated trading (underground or black market for goods and services) to make ends meet.
It is one thing to regulate drugs to insure purity and quality, quite another thing to regulate them so harshly that doctors are afraid to prescribe pain medication for fear they will go to jail. It's one thing to regulate construction so buildings don't collapse or burn down, quite another thing to mandate insurance, workman's comp, permits, licenses, bonding and assorted fees and taxes that add up to half the cost of any project.
