How do you lay a paver patio over a utility line cut in your lawn?

What is the proper way to lay a paver patio on top of a roughed-in utility line cut in my lawn?  We had a gas line installed for our pool heater and now we want a paver patio installed overtop of it.  The dirt was just thrown back in the hole, but no special tamping was done of the ground.

Life is a one lap race. Make many pitstops.

You can rent a tamper at Lowes, Home Depot, etc., if you want it done right. They are not too expensive.
