What are the laws on strip searching?

my mother in law went to visit my husband in state prison. when she arrived at the visiting area she was approached by some officers and asked to step into a room. She had our 2 kids with her ages 6 and 15. The officers questioned and interigated the kids and my mother in law. they sent officers out to search her van. they then took my mother in law into another room where they strip searched her and made her squat and cough! they then took all 3 to the nearest hospital where they then did a body x ray on her to see if she had any illegal contraband concealed inside her body. They found nothing in her vehicle, on or in her person. they said that someone was smuggling in illegal things. My mother in law has no criminal record at all! She is a mom, grandmother, senior citizen, tax paying, law abiding citizen! they then terminated her from being able to visit her son. A few days later he was transfered to another prison. Is this not a violation of human rights? can she sue them for this? It was traumatizing and humiliating for her to be put through that! It was also traumatizing to our kids! There was no probable cause for this and i am just outraged! what should she do? can she do anything about it?

No. You play by their rules when at their house.

My impression is that by entering the facility you agree to reasonable terms and conditions. If the authorities had a good faith belief that the search was necessary then they could proceed. I do not believe that a cause of action exists against the prison or their employees.

It may not be fair, but it's probably legal. You can always contact a civil rights attorney and see if you have any status to sue.
