If you're in the U.S. a lawyer will be provided free if you are facing criminal charges. Dial 211, and United Way may be able to find a lawyer willing to work pro bono, or at least offer advice on the next step.
Check with legal aid -- you may qualify for free assistance. If you don't, see if you can work out a payment plan with a lawyer. In any event, you must take action and show up.

Depending on the legal situation, you can contact legal aid in your area. You can also contact an advocacy group. A local law school may also be willing to give legal advice.
