If you're in the U.S. a lawyer will be provided free if you are facing criminal charges.  Dial 211, and United Way may be able to find a lawyer willing to work pro bono, or at least offer advice on the next step.

Check with legal aid -- you may qualify for free assistance.  If you don't, see if you can work out a payment plan with a lawyer.  In any event, you must take action and show up.

Hey, I read the answers before responding!!  Good answer.  I've personally had to make payments to a lawyer before.

Depending on the legal situation, you can contact legal aid in your area.  You can also contact an advocacy group.  A local law school may also be willing to give legal advice.
