How can I find a label to release a CD from my Dark Ambient musical project?
robblatt.com
Might I suggest a different approach?
If your tunes are good enough, you don't need a record label, but proper distribution. The old model for record labels was that they would produce the physical discs for you, pay for the recording, pay for the promotion and do the distribution.
It sounds like the disc is completed. If it is, then there's no need for a label to pay for the studio time to record. If you've got a few hundred dollars then you can pay to have the CDs pressed professionally. If you don't have that kinda scratch, then you can go the completely indie route, make the album art at a kinkos or a staples and burn CD-Rs to raise cash to produce the discs yourself. If you use a service like CDBaby to sell your discs or Discmakers to make your discs then you can also swing digital distributiuon througgh Apple, Napster, Rhapsody, eMusic and others. You could even have a cmopany like Lulu produce your discs one at a time for people who order them.
The promotion work can be done by you too. Throught he right message boards, MySpace, Friendster, FaceBook, TagWorld, Bebo, Pandora, Last.fm and other social networking and music related websites you can generate enough buzz that you don't need anyone else to do your work for you.
And if you generate enough buzz and have enough notoriety then labels will come looking for you insteadof the other way around. Then you get to choose not only who gest to put out your discs, but if you even want anyone to do it fot you anymore.
Well, first I'd look at the music that inspires you - your favorite Dark Ambient bands and see what labels produced their cds. Send inquiries to these labels.
Another avenue is getting on compilations - there are many compilations produced that showcase new bands - this gives you an easier pathway to getting your music and name to the masses and possibly the attention of a record label.
MySpace is ok, but I will tell you from experience (I run an internet radio station), labels are not going to have time to listen to your MySpace page as there are about a million other people asking them to do the same.
I would contact a record label that releases similar music as you perform and email them to let them know you're going to send them a demo. Send them a cd-r with information about you - the better the packaging, the more likely they'll look at it. This may sound stupid, but try and package it in something unusual (if I receive a bunch of manilla envelopes and one neon green envelope, guess which one gets opened first).
After sending your demo, give it a couple of weeks and send a follow-up email. You may not get a response (as your music may still be on a stack somewhere), so send another email a few weeks after that. Make sure to describe your package if you sent an unusual package as it distinguishes you from the others.
Persistence is key - eventually someone will respond, if only because of your persistence.
Check out GarageBand.com. I have 3 of my pieces of music up there. It's free and has a great interface. It will allow other people to review your music, and also for $s allow you to send music to all the net radio stations.
To apply the Portuguese copyright laws, in order to do a CD myself I have to spend more than a few dollars: something like 4000 Euros. If I go on the CD-R route (which I did in the previous albums) I can't (legally) sell them. I didn't knew about diskmakers: thanks for the hint.
You might want to look at Creative Commons for copyright.
<a href="http://www.creativecommons.org">Creative Commons</a>.
Check it out, read through the literature, it's an alternative to copyright and when you are first starting out, I think it's a great way to allow your music to be accessable but still mainatain some rights to it.
