When your kids' heroes fall

Chris Brown and Rihanna. Michael Phelps. A-Rod. Kids’ favorite celebs have been making headlines. What do you say when a hero takes a tumble?

I suppose you tell your children that no one is perfect, and that just because their role model is famous, doesn't mean that they always do or say the right things.

If you think things can't get worse it's probably only because you lack sufficient imagination.

I say you need to edit the information your kids are taking in because if Chris Brown and Rihanna are their "heroes and role models"....something is seriously wrong with the world!  A lot less MTV and a little more hitting the books would be my advice.  Remember the saying...garbage in ...garbage out!

Its an excellent opportunity to discuss how important it is to make good choices and to also remind them that we're human and do make mistakes sometimes.  We just have to pick ourselves up, learn from it, and move forward.

The first thing is any child shouldn't be told that anyone is perfect, everyone makes mistakes(ball players. actors, singers)  it needs to be taught to them, not to idolize anyone except the man upstairs

you teach your kid that these celebrities aren't heroes.  They are human and they make mistakes.  if the "hero" in question takes swift action to remedy the situation, you tell your kid to stand by them.  Michael Phelps for example, i mean, really?  What jerk released that picture?  I teach my kid to watch their backs, too.  You never know who is waiting to catch you.  Phelps was letting loose for the first time in a long time, not a big deal in my book.  But in some parents minds it was awful.  We all have opinions, yet another thing to teach our kids.  we can agree to disagree.

You say all people are a combination of good and bad, and perhaps making too much of heroes is a figment of television.  Might have been a good idea to tell them that even sooner!

Even heroes are human , and humans make mistakes . No matter how much we would like for all the celebs to be perfict it dont work that way because the are no diffrent then you or me . and remind them that the only reason that that was posted is that they are in the public eye and things like that happen everyplace . i do not belive in sheltering children from the real world because one day they have to live in it .
