Why don't search engines such as Lycos, Altavista ...

Why don't search engines such as Lycos, Altavista, etc (that is, all non-Google search engines Laughing ) take interest in the niche of custom search engines (or at least it seem so to me)? Google Custom Search has very few competitors and it itself is too far from perfect.

They could improve search quality as well. Google said it's all about algoriths when it comes to show results. Now people are involved too. If we fought all these SEOs search would be better

There market share is so small compared to Google that perhaps focusing on a single niche would be beneficial.
