The age of information....
In about 20 years we went from having too less information that was too hard to find to having way too much information that is too easy to find.
I actually don't think there's anything wrong with that - I like knowing things even if it's not the things I was looking for, I think that idling in front of the computer screen reading is way better then idling in front of the TV. I think that we all need to waste time on a day to day basis and that reading useless information is not a bad way of doing it.
How about changing your perception of aquiaring knowledge instead?
Think about it as shopping in a huge mall - people go to malls to shop for something specific, like lets say - a pair of shoes, but on the way to doing that, they also meet friends, learn about what's in fashion, eat something tasty, use the bathroom, and have a full experience rather then just finding the shoes and going home.
I hate malls, another example - it's like a museum - even if you went in just to see the new Picasso, it's a shame to no walk through the Egyptian temple and the Roman Greek exhibit.
